The programs include canine therapy, where a volunteer owner and their dog, as a trained and registered therapy team, provide individual engagement to help kindergartens through sixth graders improve their reading skills by reading to a dog. Therapy teams may also to help people better deal with illness or grief with the comfort of a dog. Through the youth canine programs, vulnerable teens are taught to train shelter dogs basic obedience skills, which allows the teens to learn responsibility and important life skills while increasing the dogs’ chances for adoption and finding a forever home. Nelson has served on the Board of Paws and Think since February 2014.
