Josh S. Tatum Who We Are

Josh S. Tatum, Associate Back to Attorney List

Josh S. Tatum focuses much of his practice on appeals, having participated from both the judicial and advocacy perspectives in dozens of cases in Indiana’s state appellate courts and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He regularly advises churches and other religious organizations on a variety of legal issues including employment issues, taxes, zoning, landlord-tenant, and corporate governance. Josh serves as the formally designated Synod Attorney for the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

Josh is also active in education law, particularly on issues of school choice and religiously affiliated education. In addition, he represents clients in complex litigation cases often involving environmental, insurance coverage, and commercial law.

Josh passionately seeks to advance the legal profession.  He serves on the Indiana Supreme Court’s Committee on Character and Fitness, to which he was first appointed by the Court in 2013.  He regularly serves clients of limited means through the Indiana State Bar Association’s Pro Bono Committee.  He is part of the firm’s team representing an inmate on Alabama’s death row, whose case is currently pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.  He is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association’s Leadership Development Academy Planning Committee.  And he serves on the Indiana Pro Bono Commission’s Technology Committee.

Josh is very active in the Indianapolis community, serving as chair of the Indiana YMCA Youth and Government Advisory Board,  and as a member of the Indianapolis Association of Wabash Men Board of Directors. He also chairs the Trinity Lutheran Seminary Summer Seminary Sampler Advisory Board.  Josh blogs about legal issues affecting religious organizations and their leaders at Law Meets Gospel.

Josh earned his A.B., summa cum laude, with majors in History and Political Science, with distinction in each, from Wabash College in 2003. He received joint J.D. and M.Div. degrees from Vanderbilt University’s Law and Divinity schools, respectively, in 2008. He then served for two years as a law clerk to former Indiana Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard.  Josh joined Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP in 2010.
